His Sire, ROYAL ACADEMY is also the sire in Australia, of hotly-demanded stallion BEL ESPRIT ( himself the sire of current World Champion Horse BLACK CAVIAR ).

ROYAL GEM won 4 times on turf from 1300 metres to 1900 metres including victory in the Grade 3 Bay Meadows Derby, after racing three wide for most of the journey and beating graded Stakes winners ALY BUBBA and CENTURY CITY. Milers tend to make the best Sires at Stud.

He also won the Listed Santa Anita Academy Road Stakes at only his second start, storming home from last place, coming eight wide on the final turn. Perhaps one of his best achievements was his meritorious 3rd behind JOHAR, running home well in the Grade1 Hollywood Derby ( 9 furlongs, turf ).
