Westbury Stud are delighted to welcome top-class racehorse Redwood back to our stallion roster in 2013 providing New Zealand breeders with an opportunity to support a Group 1 winning son of High Chaparral. The purchase of Redwood will see him based in New Zealand permanently, and allow both shareholders and breeders alike, the comfort of being able to support a stallion who resides permanently in New Zealand.

Bred and owned by Prince Khalid Abdulla's Juddmonte Farm, Redwood was trained throughout his career by leading conditioners Barry & Charlie Hills - the horse winning 4 of his 17 career starts and retiring with an impressive stakes tally of US$2,335,955. In seventeen starts, Redwood started in 16 black type races, and from day one always showed good ability winning his only start at two over one mile at Newmarket.

From just two starts at three, Redwood was a Listed winner over 9 furlongs, before finding a real purple patch of form when he returned to the track as a four-year-old.

From 9 starts at four, Redwood won the Gr.1 Northern Dancer Stakes over 2400m at Woodbine and the Gr.3 Glorious Stakes at Goodwood, in addition to second placings in the Gr.1 Hong Kong Vase (to Mastery and ahead of Americain), Gr.2 Grand Prix de Deauville, Gr.2 Princess of Wales Stales and the Gr.3 Gordon Richards Stakes at Goodwood (beaten narrowly by Glass Harmonium) - a total of 2 wins, 4 seconds, 1 third, and US$1,238, 514 in stakes for the year.

Following a well-deserved spell and a fruitful four-year-old season, Redwood was gallant in defeat with So You Think's European conqueror Rewilding his only precursor in the Gr.1 Dubai Sheema Classic over 2410m, as a five-year-old.

Redwood was allocated a Timeform rating of 121 as a four-year-old in a career which saw him defeat (and ranked above) the likes of Manighar, Glass Harmonium, My Kingdom of Fife, Drunken Sailor - all horses with Group form at the highest level in Australia - while his form around world class horses such as Rewilding in the Gr.1 Dubai Sheema Classic, Americain in Hong Kong, and subsequent Group 1 winner Glass Harmonium highlights the quality of his form throughout his career.

With only one of five Group 1 winning entires by High Chaparral, Redwood looks sure to be a great addition to the ranks of New Zealand staying sires in the future, and he fills the void left by the departure of his sire High Chaparral to Australia.
