'Ripper' Foal for Champion Miler

By Windsor Park Stud August 04 2012

The first southern hemisphere foal by multiple Gr.1 winner Rip Van Winkle has been born at Trelawney Stud, Cambridge.

The colt, who is described by owner Brent Taylor as a ‘ripper’, is the second foal of their highclass Gr.2 winning racemare Ruud Van Slaats who was also Gr.1 placed in the Telegraph Handicap at Trentham and the Waikato Draught Sprint at Te Rapa.

Rated the world’s best turf miler as both a 3YO and 4YO and with a Timeform rating of 134, equal to that of his illustrious sire Galileo, Rip Van Winkle is currently Galileo’s highest rated son at stud.

Recent Irish Oaks winner Great Heavens became Galileo’s 30th individual Gr.1 winner however his headline act this year is champion unbeaten galloper Frankel, who recorded his eighth Gr.1 success yesterday when scoring back to back victories in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood, a race also won by Rip Van Winkle as a three year old.

Rip Van Winkle, who shuttles from Coolmore Stud, Ireland to Windsor Park Stud, Cambridge, recently arrived back at Windsor Park where he covered an excellent book of 137 mares in his first season last year.
